Three easy ways to measure your ring size at home

Three easy ways to measure your ring size at home

To be comfortable to wear, the ring should fit easily on the finger, so that it does not fall off, but remains loose enough to slide over the knuckle-joint of the finger with some resistance. It is therefore very important to know the best size of the ring, as you do not want to lose it. Of course, the most accurate way is to measure with a ring gauge at any jeweller or jewellery shop. However, this isn't always the case, so here are three easy ways to determine your ring size at home, so you can easily order the ring you want online.

In Lithuania, ring sizes range from 15 to 22.5, and in exceptional cases can be smaller or larger.

Before you start measuring your ring size, you should take note of a few tips on how to do it properly:

Pay attention to your finger. If you know that the knuckle-joint of your finger is larger, you should take this into account and perhaps even order a ring half a size larger than your finger alone would indicate. Otherwise, you won't be able to push the ring into the right place.

Take the measurement several times, perhaps even at different times, as the size varies according to the temperature - it may be smaller when you are colder and larger when you are overheated. Importantly, fingers can also become swollen if you've done a lot of sports or drank a lot of fluids. It is best to take the measurement in the afternoon when your hand has warmed up a little.

The wider the ring, the more it will feel. If you are going to order a ring that is 6mm or more wide, choose a size larger than the one you normally wear (at least half a size).

When measuring a ring, it is important to consider that there is always a 1-2mm margin of error, so if you are unsure about the size, it is always a good idea to go larger, i.e. round up.

If you are hesitating between two sizes, always choose the larger size.

So here are three of the most common and easy ways to measure your ring size at home - using a string, a ring size chart and a ring gauge. We hope this helps you to buy the right piece of jewellery - whether it's a gift for yourself or a loved one.

1. Option One: Use string or thread to measure your finger

Take a piece of thread or string (you can also use paper tape) and wrap it around the base of your finger where you want the ring to be. Use a pen to mark the point where the thread or string first overlaps. Try pulling the resulting 'ring' through the knuckle-joint with the finger of your other hand. If it moves easily, then everything is fine, if not, loosen it a little. Then mark the joining point and stretch the string along a ruler or measuring tape and write down the length in millimetres, which will be the length of the ring circumference. You can also divide this figure by 3.14 to get the size of the ring you want.

Using the table of ring sizes at the bottom, compare your measurements with the standard ring sizes, which increase by half a size.

2. Option 2: Measure the diameter of a ring you already have

If you or your loved one already has a ring that they wear on that finger, then remove the ring and measure its diameter (inside diameter). A caliper is best for this, but you can also do it with a ruler. The millimetres obtained also indicate the size of the ring (see table below).

3. Option 3: Buy your own ring gauge.

For the most accurate measurement, you can buy your own ring measuring tool. They are usually not expensive and there are many versions available on the internet (paper, plastic, etc.), so once you have bought one, you can use it later on and maybe even lend it to others.

Ring size chart you can find in Lithuanian version of this page.
